This project was completed whilst Ash was working with Bellemo & Cat. When the client walked into the offices of Bellemo & Cat and said 'build me a house out in a paddock for around $100,00', it was a challenge we could not refuse.
This house in Elphinstone - in north western Victoria - is incredibly simple in layout, yet dynamic in profile. It's a nod to nomadic architecture, or a glorified caravan, and was built with only one detailed section required. The house has all the basic amenities - a living-dining-kitchen space, a bathroom, small laundry and one bedroom. The butterfly shaped roofline leads the eye from the high louvres to the north, to the panoramic view looking out the bifold windows along the south wall.
In a bold move, the client agreed to a simple yet eye catching colour scheme with a very dominant red used on the walls and ceiling. The ply floor was finished in a Black Japan stain.
This house is a place the that client will always come back to in Australia as they travel frequently overseas. It has been published in Houses magazine and more recently in a book titled Designing with Black : Architecture & Interiors.
